Ingredient Spotlight: Glycolic Acid

Exfoliators Ingredient Spotlight

Glycolic Acid in SupriyaMD Skincare | Supriya Tomar MD

Ah, there’s nothing more satisfying than a good facial scrub. The gritty texture, the feeling of thoroughly clearing out dirt, the baby smooth skin afterward… but sorry, we’re not talking about physical exfoliators today. A lot of people think that if there isn’t a gritty texture, it isn’t exfoliating as much as it should be. This isn’t always the case though.

Glycolic acid just happens to be one of our favorite exfoliators, and it comes in chemical form instead of physical. The first benefit that deserves mention is how much more gentle chemical exfoliators can be on your skin. And we don’t want to scare anyone off with the word “chemical” since it seems to have a bad rap in the world of skincare (more on that here). In this case, the “chemical” is an acid that provides all the same smoothing, anti-aging, and acne-banishing results without causing all that irritation on your skin that can come with physical exfoliators and scrubs.

Glycolic acid’s flexibility with most skin types makes it a suitable ingredient in almost any treatment, and for almost any skin type. Its small molecular makeup makes it easy to penetrate into the skin with minimal irritation, and it can be found in everything from every day cleansers and exfoliators to professional treatments and chemical peels. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that's found in plants and milk, and its ability to penetrate your skin makes it a great ingredient for anyone looking for an impactful exfoliator that won't be too harsh on their skin.

Glycolic acid is also a popular addition to body lotions because of its ability to hold moisture in the skin, stimulating collagen production and plumping skin by speeding up cell turnover.

Glycolic acid is particularly helpful for anyone dealing with acne, hyperpigmentation, scars, and uneven skin tone. Whether it's acne that's caused by hormonal shifts or your environment, this AHA is strong enough to put a stop to your acne and gentle enough to prevent further irritation in your already sensitive skin. Glycolic acid also has benefits for anti-aging with it's ability to increase collagen production and hold moisture in your skin. So anyone concerned with fine lines or wrinkles will see a noticeable improvement with regular peels containing glycolic acid. We recommend adding glycolic acid to an already robust anti-aging routine since it will work well with other products to enhance their benefits.
